Mesothelioma Symptoms – Stay Alert with the Early Warnings
Mesothelium is the membrane that surrounds most organs in the human body. The membrane also provides a sheath that covers the cavity where the organs are suspended. It also contains a fluid which prevents the loosely hang or suspended organs such as the heart and liver from knocking each other.
The mesothelium cells may experience abnormal cancerous growth. This is referred to as Mesothelioma. It is caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos, a natural dust that is large used in building materials and making brake pads or other high friction industrial parts.
Mesothelioma is a terminal disease that may affect various parts of the organs in the abdomen and the upper cavity. The only way of mitigating against the impact of the disease including delaying death of organs and the individual is by having a an early warning system in form of mesothelioma symptoms. Like all other cancer diseases, the chances of cure or highly effective management are only greater if the mesothelioma symptoms are detected early enough or before it spreads too many other organs.
Again like most cancers, mesothelioma symptoms may become obvious after more than 30 or even 50 years after one is exposed to the risk factor asbestos. Within this long period, the growth of the cancerous cells may have reached extreme levels that may be irreversible.
The following symptoms even among those who are not sure if they have been exposed to a large extent to asbestos should prompt medical checkup:
Difficulty in breathing associated with pain in the chest: this may be characteristic of many other infections including pneumonia. However, it better to be safe than sorry. You can request your physician to check for possible mesothelioma. If you have a history of living in environments where you are likely to be exposed to asbestos for a long period such as the mines or factories using it as raw materials or derivatives, then you should rule this out first. The pain is said to occur due to the accumulation of fluids in the pleura. This could indicate the infection of pleura sheath.
Short breath which often accompanies the sharp pains in the chest cavity is also a mesothelioma symptom. This could be due to the effect of reduced cavity space for the proper functioning of the diaphragm.
Weight loss is also an indicator of mesothelioma: This is due the fact that the pains when breathing and the pin in the abdominal cavity may prevent one from eating well. This could explain the weight loss. Additional symptoms include difficulty in digestion of food and processing of fecal matter, appearance of blood clots in the stool and fever and anemia.
